Sterling Bay’s proposed two-tower multifamily development in Lincoln Park has hit a roadblock as opposition from a local alderman has caused delays in the approval process. The City Plan Commission, appointed by the mayor, had initially approved the project near Lincoln Yards despite objections from Alderman Scott Waguespack of the 32nd Ward where it is located. However, both Waguespack and Sterling Bay’s zoning attorney have requested for a deferral of voting on the project at City Council’s Zoning Committee until a later meeting.
According to Crain’s report, Sterling Bay plans to construct a 25-story building with 615 apartments on an industrial site at 1840 North Marcey Street near their $6 billion Lincoln Yards megaproject. This is slightly shorter than their previous proposal for a 27-story building.
The progress of this development through Chicago’s administrative processes serves as an important test case for Mayor Johnson’s commitment to improving and streamlining procedures for housing and commercial developments in the city.
