Adaptive Reuse Projects in Houston: Leading the State

Adaptive Reuse Projects in Houston: Leading the State

Houston is the seventh-largest city in the US and leads Texas in adaptive reuse projects. Of these, 60% are repurposed office spaces while former hotels have also become popular conversion sources at a 30% share. An example of this is the old Houston Post Office which was converted to retail (see photo).

A Rentcafe survey revealed that there are currently 2,205 future development projects lined up for Houston – more than double since 2021 when 890 were projected. Dallas follows closely behind with 1,912 apartment conversions planned for its downtown area.

In Harris County along zip code 77002 alone, 85% of upcoming units will be apartments created by repurposing offices (1,353), hotels (667) and retail stores (100). However only 20% of these forthcoming projects have begun construction as most remain in planning stages.
