The National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) has launched the Foundations for Rental Housing, an initiative designed to support residents as they build their lives in rental communities. This announcement follows a meeting between NMHC leaders and the White House to discuss how housing providers can better implement resident-centered housing management practices.
The Foundations identify six core concepts that form the basis of a positive relationship between rental housing providers and residents. As of Thursday, 100 multifamily apartment providers and supporters representing 3,762,482 apartments across 50 states plus Washington D.C., have signed onto operate according to these principles:
– Engage with residents in order to foster mutual respect, trust and communication;
– Have procedures in place for responding promptly to resident requests;
– Comply with all applicable anti-discrimination laws related fair housing or credit;
– Support those who express interest in enhancing their credit through rent payment reporting;
– Respond quickly when tenants facing financial hardship seek external resources;
– Clearly outline rights & responsibilities of lease holders & landlords within lease documents.
Sharon Wilson Géno – President at NMHC – commented on this launch: “We see the Foundations as essential for building positive relationships within rental communities however many members are already going beyond these principles by providing additional support” .
