Brookfield Selected to Redevelop Naval Weapons Station in Concord, CA

The Concord City Council has selected Brookfield Properties to redevelop the former Concord Naval Weapons Station, according to the San Jose Mercury News. This decision marks a major step forward in achieving Concord’s goal of revitalizing the 2,300-acre Navy-owned property and follows agreements with two previous master developers that were eventually scrapped.

Brookfield’s plan calls for a mixed-use and transit-oriented community that would be one of the largest development projects currently underway in Bay Area, reported by Mercury News. The developer has agreed to designate at least 25% housing onsite as affordable; hire 40% of its construction workforce from within Contra Costa County; and prioritize connecting the community to nearby BART station during first phase of construction.

“Third time’s charm,” said Mayor Laura Hoffmeister at Saturday’s Council meeting. “It is a marathon not sprint but we hope to get off starting line over next few months.” Final phases are projected for completion between 30 – 40 years from now.
