Hydroponic growing can be a lucrative business venture. Plant Agricultural Systems (PLANT-AS) is investing significantly in Amarillo and Lubbock, Texas. The company will develop 1,100 acres of advanced Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) production facilities across the two cities as part of its domestic operations roll out.
The Amarillo project includes 9 million square feet of CEA production on 400 acres at the Centerpoint East site with an investment projection of $510 million over seven years to employ more than 700 full-time employees with a payroll estimated at $35 million. Leafy greens and vine crops such as tomatoes will be produced using state-of-the art hydroponic technology for distribution throughout the southwestern U.S..
In Lubbock, PLANT-AS’ operations span 700 acres where 13.3 million square feet of CEA production facilities are being developed with an investment projection totaling $670 million over 10 years to employ 900 full time employees earning a combined salary estimated at $45million annually . The company claims that their water usage is 70 to 90 percent less than traditional agricultural methods .
