Walmart is moving forward with plans for a large-scale, high-tech fulfillment center in Carnesville, bringing a major industrial development to Franklin County. The project represents a $1.3 billion investment and is expected to create 1,000 new jobs in the community. Carnesville sits roughly 85 miles northeast of Atlanta, positioning the facility within reach of a major consumer and logistics hub.
The planned fulfillment center will span approximately 1.5 million square feet and will feature an automated design intended to support Walmart’s e-commerce and distribution operations. The facility is slated to rise within the Franklin 85 Logistics Center in Carnesville, underscoring the corridor’s role as a strategic location for logistics and industrial users. According to the company, its fulfillment centers are placed in markets that enhance same-day and next-day shipping capabilities across the United States, and this development is part of that broader network strategy.
Construction on the Carnesville facility is anticipated to commence in late 2026. While specific milestones beyond the construction start have not been disclosed, the scale of the project signals a long-term commitment to building out Walmart’s supply chain infrastructure in the region. The automated nature of the center is expected to support high-throughput order processing, though detailed design features and technologies have not been outlined in the available information.
In addition to its planned fulfillment center in Franklin County, Walmart has recently expanded its production footprint elsewhere in the state. The company operates a 300,000-square-foot dairy processing facility in Valdosta, Georgia, which officially opened late last year. That facility reflects Walmart’s efforts to deepen its control over certain parts of its supply chain, including food production and processing, and complements the company’s broader logistics investments.
Walmart’s presence across Georgia is already extensive. The retailer operates 209 Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations in the state, alongside 11 supply chain facilities. Collectively, these operations employ more than 65,300 associates statewide. Walmart also maintains significant relationships with local businesses in Georgia through its supplier base. In fiscal year 2025, the company spent more than $26.2 billion with suppliers based in Georgia, which it reports supported more than 167,600 supplier jobs during that period.
Against that backdrop, the new Carnesville fulfillment center represents a continuation of Walmart’s logistics and distribution expansion in Georgia. By adding a large, automated industrial facility to the Franklin 85 Logistics Center, the company is further embedding its supply chain operations in the state while broadening the reach of its same-day and next-day delivery capabilities across the U.S.
