Community Roots Housing and Kids Co. have started construction on a new early learning center within CopperLeaf Northgate, an affordable housing community in Seattle. The initiative adds on-site child care to the multifamily property, aligning residential uses with family-focused services in the same location.
The project will convert 7,761 square feet of ground-floor space, along with an adjacent outdoor play area, into a dedicated early learning environment. The space is being purpose-built for child care, replacing a standard ground-floor area with facilities tailored to the needs of young children and their families.
For Kids Co., the development marks a notable milestone. The CopperLeaf Northgate facility will be the organization’s first standalone early learning center located outside a Seattle Public Schools building. The move expands Kids Co.’s footprint into a mixed-use, multifamily setting while maintaining its focus on early childhood education.
Construction on the center is currently underway. Walsh Construction is serving as the general contractor for the buildout, overseeing the physical conversion of the space. CAST Architecture is responsible for the architecture and interior design, shaping the layout and finishes to support an early learning program and outdoor play.
CopperLeaf Northgate opened earlier this year and is reported to be fully leased, underscoring demand for affordable housing at this location. The property was initially envisioned as a transit-oriented community, and the addition of child care is positioned as an extension of that concept by integrating critical services into the residential setting.
The property is located adjacent to Northgate Station, reinforcing its role as a transit-connected multifamily community. By adding on-site early learning, Community Roots Housing and Kids Co. are layering educational and family services into an existing affordable housing asset, further embedding community-oriented uses within a transit-accessible environment.
