Morehouse School of Medicine and Atrium Health are advancing plans for a new teaching hospital complex at 675 Metropolitan Parkway SW, envisioned as the hub of a broader healthcare network serving communities across Central and South Fulton County. The initiative is structured to integrate inpatient, outpatient and community-based services, with the aim of expanding access to care within neighborhoods that have historically faced limited proximity to major medical facilities.
Atrium Health plans to commit more than $700 million in combined capital and clinical investment to the hospital and the wider care network. This long-term allocation is intended to support both the construction of core facilities and the deployment of clinical resources necessary to operate an expanded continuum of care. A primary objective of the program is to deliver a Level III trauma center and a wider range of acute and emergency services closer to where residents live, reducing the need for patients to travel longer distances for urgent treatment.
The development blueprint calls for an acute care hospital that will anchor a mix of complementary healthcare assets. These include primary care practices, locations that combine primary and urgent care, and facilities dedicated to specialty services. Additional components will span virtual and community-based care offerings, creating multiple points of access that extend beyond the main hospital campus. A healthplex is also planned, with services such as imaging, infusion, endoscopy and emergency care designed to support both hospital patients and the surrounding population.
At opening, the new hospital is expected to operate with approximately 50 beds, with a framework in place to scale the facility to more than 700 beds over time as community needs evolve. This phased expansion model is intended to allow capacity growth alongside population demand and care utilization patterns, rather than delivering the full build-out on day one. Clinical services at the hospital are slated to include 24/7 emergency care and Level III trauma capabilities, obstetrics, a neonatal intensive care unit, adult critical care, advanced imaging, cardiac catheterization, interventional radiology and endoscopy.
As a teaching hospital, the facility will be closely tied to Morehouse School of Medicine’s academic and training mission, supporting the development of future physicians and clinical professionals while also expanding access to care locally. The integration of medical education with a multi-site delivery network is expected to help align training with the specific needs of Central and South Fulton County communities, while Atrium Health’s capital commitment underpins the physical and clinical infrastructure required to operate the new system of care.
