Vivmark Residential began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol VMRK following the completion of a merger of equals between Equity Residential and AvalonBay Communities. The combination, which closed on Monday, creates an apartment-focused real estate investment trust with a stated market capitalization of $51 billion and an enterprise value of $70 billion. Trading in Vivmark shares moved higher on Tuesday afternoon as the newly formed company entered the public markets under its new name and symbol.
The merger brings together two large multifamily platforms under a single corporate structure. Equity Residential and AvalonBay Communities have been combined to form Vivmark Residential, positioning the entity as a major participant in the rental housing sector. The enterprises’ scale is reflected in the reported market capitalization and enterprise value figures disclosed alongside the launch of trading.
Vivmark’s chief executive officer, Benjamin Schall, outlined the leadership team’s objectives as the company begins operating under its new structure. Schall said the company’s vision is to become the most trusted and best-performing rental housing company in the United States, emphasizing a strategy of improving performance as Vivmark’s footprint grows. He also noted that the broader management team of Vivmark officers is now in place, which he said positions the company to provide a seamless Day 1 experience for residents across its portfolio.
The company’s executive leadership includes Michael Manelis, who serves as chief operating officer, and Kevin O’Shea, who serves as chief financial officer. This senior management group is tasked with integrating the combined organizations and overseeing operations, finance, and execution of Vivmark’s rental housing strategy following the completion of the merger.
Governance of the new REIT reflects the merger-of-equals structure, with a board that includes seven trustees from each of the legacy companies. The board is chaired by Stephen Sterrett, who will lead the oversight of Vivmark’s strategy and corporate direction. The structure of the board is designed to balance representation from both Equity Residential and AvalonBay Communities as they transition into a single corporate entity.
Vivmark is described as being dual headquartered in Arlington, VA and Chicago. From these two locations, the leadership team will oversee the combined operations created by the merger. As trading in VMRK begins and integration proceeds, Vivmark steps into the public markets with significant scale in the apartment REIT space and a fully installed executive and board leadership structure.
