Coffee TAB, a nonprofit coffee shop and workforce development program, is preparing to open a new location this summer at 23rd & Jackson in Seattle’s Central Area. The organization will occupy the northeast corner storefront of the intersection, a space owned by Vulcan Real Estate, bringing an additional community-focused retail use to the mixed commercial fabric of the neighborhood.
The new Central Area shop builds on Coffee TAB’s existing presence in Seattle, where it already operates locations in Belltown and Pioneer Square. Across its sites, Coffee TAB is structured as both a retail coffee operation and a job training platform, offering participants a chance to gain hands-on experience in a functioning hospitality environment.
Through its apprenticeship model, Coffee TAB provides training in core workplace skills that are directly relevant to customer-facing roles. Participants learn customer service fundamentals, coffee preparation techniques, and day-to-day operational tasks associated with running a coffee business. The program also emphasizes workplace communication and professional responsibility, aiming to prepare apprentices for long-term employment opportunities beyond the coffee sector.
Local officials have framed the new opening as a benefit not only for program participants but for the surrounding community as well. Seattle City Council President Joy Hollingsworth noted that when a business invests both in a specific corner and in the development of young people, the entire neighborhood feels the impact. She described Coffee TAB’s arrival as bringing opportunity, connection, and energy to the heart of the Central Area, and expressed support for seeing the initiative established at this prominent intersection.
The 23rd & Jackson site is part of a broader portfolio that Vulcan Real Estate has built in Seattle over more than two decades. Since 2000, the firm reports investing $6.5 billion in developing 52 projects that together comprise 10.3 million square feet of commercial space and 4,250 residential units. These projects span multiple neighborhoods and product types, reflecting a long-term urban investment strategy.
Vulcan Real Estate’s development activity has been particularly concentrated in South Lake Union, which accounts for 60 percent of the company’s projects by location. That focus has helped shape one of Seattle’s most active innovation districts, while the 23rd & Jackson property extends Vulcan’s footprint into the Central Area. With Coffee TAB’s upcoming opening, the corner storefront is expected to serve not only as a retail destination but also as a platform for workforce training embedded directly in the community.
By combining a nonprofit operator with a high-visibility intersection and an experienced commercial real estate owner, the new Coffee TAB location illustrates how ground-floor retail space can be aligned with social impact objectives. As the shop opens this summer, stakeholders will be watching how the apprenticeship program, neighborhood activation, and Vulcan’s long-term investment approach interact at this Central Area address.
