Explore the Universe at Univ. of Arizona’s $85M Space Science Lab!

The University of Arizona recently celebrated the opening of its $85M Applied Research Building (ARB), a state-of-the-art research facility that further cements the university’s reputation as a leader in space research. SmithGroup designed and McCarthy built the 89,000-square-foot ARB, which is believed to be the first building in America to house all satellite fabrication and testing spaces under one roof.

The new building offers an array of facilities for advanced research purposes, including the largest thermal vacuum chamber at any university worldwide; high bay payload assembly areas used for constructing stratospheric balloons and CubeSats; anechoic chambers to test antennae command control data relay capabilities; plus a large dynamic testing lab suitable for examining everything from airplane wings to sensors.

This milestone marks another step forward toward achieving excellence in space science education at The University of Arizona.
