Ground has officially broken on a major expansion and renovation of the Lied Center for Performing Arts in Lincoln, marking the start of the Building the Future project at Nebraska’s Performing Arts Center. The initiative is backed by $35 million in private funding and is designed to modernize and expand the facility that supports the University of Nebraska’s performing arts programming.
Site preparation for the project began in early February, following formal approval by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents. With approvals in place and construction activity underway, the plans call for work to proceed while the Lied Center continues to host performances and educational programs. The project team is targeting a completion date in fall 2027, positioning the center for an enhanced role in the region’s cultural and educational landscape once work is finished.
The scope of work includes an approximately 11,150-square-foot addition that will expand the center’s footprint and capabilities. A key element of the new space is a studio theater designed to accommodate performances, workshops, arts education classes, and rehearsals. This flexible venue is intended to support a range of programming needs, from smaller productions to instructional uses that complement the center’s main performance spaces.
Beyond the studio theater itself, the expansion will introduce several supporting spaces intended to improve both user and audience experience. Plans call for a new dressing room to serve performers, as well as a shared foyer that will function as a circulation and gathering area for the studio theater. The project also includes a new entry lobby featuring a ticket office, allowing for more efficient patron service and a clearer point of arrival for visitors.
In addition to the new construction, the Building the Future initiative calls for a substantial renovation component. Approximately 25,250 square feet across all three levels of the Lied Center will be upgraded as part of the effort. These improvements are aimed at refreshing and modernizing existing areas, though specific finishes and systems were not detailed in the project description.
Design responsibilities for the project are being handled by HDR, which is serving as architect. The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company has been engaged as construction manager, overseeing execution of both the addition and renovation elements. Together, the team is tasked with delivering a contemporary performing arts environment while keeping the facility operational throughout the construction schedule.
By combining new space with targeted upgrades to existing areas, the project is intended to enhance the Lied Center’s capacity to host performances, support arts education, and provide rehearsal and workshop environments. The privately funded investment underscores institutional and donor commitment to the long-term viability and relevance of Nebraska’s Performing Arts Center.
