For nearly 150 years, the Commercial Club of Chicago has been a leader in addressing public safety issues. The group’s Civic Committee recently outlined five areas where the business community can make significant contributions to address both short-term and long-term causes of gun violence. These include scaling up community violence intervention (CVI) programs, hiring alumni with wraparound support services, implementing policing/criminal justice reforms, hiring from underinvested communities and investing directly in these communities. Jennifer Scanlon, chair of the Civic Committee and president & CEO of UL Solutions stated that “the business community is eager to collaborate with others on this issue and provide support through employment or investments where they are most needed”.
