**Target Store Included in $64M Redevelopment of Riverbirch Shopping Center**
Developer Casto has unveiled plans to redevelop the Riverbirch Shopping Center in Sanford, North Carolina, with a major new addition: the city’s first Target store. The redevelopment will span 62,000 square feet of retail space and also include a grocery store.
According to reports, the Sanford City Council is set to review a $4 million incentive package to support the estimated $64 million project. Casto acquired the 35-acre site in November 2022 for $10 million.
If plans proceed as scheduled, the new Target store could open as early as 2027.
The project marks part of a broader strategy by Target to expand in rapidly growing, formerly rural markets. The company opened its first store in Moore County (Southern Pines) last year and is set to launch its first Johnston County location in Selma next year.
In addition to the Sanford project, Casto recently received approval from the Clayton Town Council for a $100 million mixed-use development that could bring another Target location to the region—potentially the first for the town of Clayton.
