Groundbreaking for the first phase of Clarendon Hill Apartments in Somerville, Massachusetts has commenced. The redevelopment project is a collaboration between Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH), Somerville Community Corporation, and the Somerville Housing Authority among other partners.
Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne expressed her excitement about this transformative project: “This work will create a vibrant, mixed-income neighborhood that fosters diversity, opportunity and a sense of belonging.” Phase One involves building 168 units to replace existing 216 affordable public housing units; once completed there will be 591 total mixed-income housing units. The development aims to improve amenities and provide green spaces as well as community facilities with enhanced infrastructure meeting LEED Platinum standards for sustainability. Funding sources include Partnership to Expand Housing Opportunities program funds; Low-Income Tax Credits from Bank of America; City funds from Somerville; POAH financing options and MassHousing resources.
