**Sugar Land Acquires Historic Imperial Sugar Refinery Site for Redevelopment**

The City of Sugar Land has officially acquired the former Imperial Sugar refinery property, marking a significant step toward revitalizing one of the area’s most iconic landmarks. City officials stated that public ownership of the site allows Sugar Land to take a leadership role in shaping the future of the property and ensuring its long-term success.

The Sugar Land City Council has approved up to $50 million for both the acquisition of the site and the restoration of its historic structures, including the century-old Char House—a symbol of the city’s rich industrial history.

Originally used for sugar refining, the Char House is now an empty shell composed of horizontal and vertical beams with no existing floors. Despite the building’s current state, city leaders see its preservation as a key component of the site’s redevelopment.

To move forward, Sugar Land plans to select a private development partner by the first quarter of 2026. In the interim, the city will engage the community to gather input that will help shape the priorities for a forthcoming Master Development Agreement.

The property was acquired in two parts—half from Dhanani Private Equity Group and the other half from the Hunton Group.

This strategic move demonstrates Sugar Land’s commitment to preserving its heritage while steering future growth through a thoughtful mix of public input and private investment.
