DC Unveils Plan for New Commanders Stadium and Mixed-Use Project
Mayor Muriel Bowser and the Washington Commanders have announced a landmark agreement to bring the NFL team back to Washington, D.C., with a new stadium slated for the historic RFK campus.
The plan outlines the construction of a 65,000-seat roofed stadium on a 180-acre site at the RFK campus. The Commanders will lead the private investment, contributing a minimum of $2.7 billion toward the stadium. Complementing this, the District of Columbia will provide $500 million in public investment for horizontal infrastructure, including utility systems and roadways, and will also facilitate parking development through a $175 million revenue bond.
Events DC, the city’s official convention and sports authority, will contribute up to $181 million toward parking garages near planned community recreation facilities. As part of the broader infrastructure enhancement, the District will invest an additional $202 million in utilities infrastructure, roadway improvements, and a transit study in partnership with WMATA.
“We are thrilled to welcome the Commanders back home to the Sports Capital,” said Mayor Bowser. “When we got control of 180 acres of land on the banks of the Anacostia, we knew right away that partnering with the Commanders would be the fastest and surest route to bringing the RFK campus to life.”
The development is positioned as a revitalization project that will not only bring professional football back to the city but also serve as a catalyst for economic development and community engagement in the region.
