### DOGE Terminates Over 2.3 Million Square Feet of Federal Office Leases
Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is terminating millions of square feet of federal office leases across the United States as part of an effort to reduce government spending.
This move aligns with the administration’s broader plans to sell two-thirds of federally owned office buildings that are currently vacant or underutilized. According to a report from the *Wall Street Journal*, DOGE estimates that these lease reductions will save approximately $55 billion.
Washington, D.C. is the city most affected by the cuts, with 11 leases totaling 1.4 million square feet set to be terminated. Among the government agencies facing significant reductions, the Department of Labor will see 845,389 square feet eliminated, while the Department of Health and Human Services will lose nearly 119,812 square feet of office space.
Earlier this month, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced plans to sell half of all federal properties under its management. As of September 2024, the GSA controlled more than 363 million square feet of federally owned and leased space spread across 8,397 buildings nationwide.
