McKinney is making strides towards attracting two airlines to its municipal airport, and preparations are underway for the expansion. According to Community Impact, McKinney has allocated $72 million for the project which will include three additional gates, a quick-service concessions stand offering food and beverage options, spacious hold rooms for passengers, a rental car lot and designated drop-off area for ride-share services.
The upgraded facility will also feature a 1,500-spot parking lot with six aircraft parking positions catering to both commercial and general aviation needs. Other additions include an aircraft de-icing facility and above-ground fuel storage tanks along with other necessary infrastructure.
Initial projections indicate that the expanded terminal could serve up to 200,000 passengers annually with an average of three daily departures. As operations continue in its fifth year post-expansion; it is expected that passenger traffic could reach as high as 1 million per year.
Funding for this ambitious project will be sourced from federal low-interest transportation loans specifically designed for infrastructure development projects.
Construction on this much-awaited expansion is set to commence in May while commercial service may begin by late 2026. This exciting development promises great potential not only for McKinney but also the entire region’s economic growth.
