Limited options for suitable grocery store locations often require creative solutions. H-E-B, a popular grocery chain, is seeking approval from the Town of Buda to receive financial incentives in order to transform a former landfill into an appropriate site for their new store.
The Buda City Council has granted permission for rezoning at 15000 N. I-35 where H-E-B plans to construct a 135,000-square-foot store complete with a drive-thru True Texas BBQ restaurant, pharmacy and garden center. Construction is slated to begin in 2026 due to the need for extensive excavation (20 feet) and soil replacement on the property.
H-E-B has conducted thorough testing on the site and found no contamination issues aside from construction debris. The Austin Business Journal reports that council members emphasized the necessity of an expanded grocery option not only for Buda but also neighboring communities such as Mustang Ridge, Creedmoor, Niederwald and Del Valle.
Overall, H-E-B’s proposal showcases their innovative approach towards finding suitable locations while meeting community needs through expansion efforts like this one in Buda.
