Dallas Cabana Hotel Conversion to Apartments in Progress

Dallas Cabana Hotel Conversion to Apartments in Progress

The former Cabana Hotel, located at 899 North Stemmons Freeway, is undergoing a major transformation into a mixed-use housing development. The project will include 175 multi-family units, with 70 of them designated as affordable for residents with incomes ranging from 30% to 80% of the area median family income (AMFI) for the next four and a half decades.

With an estimated cost of over $116 million, this project has received support from the City of Dallas in the form of up to $41 million in subsidies from the Design District Tax Increment Financing (TIF) District. Sycamore Development and Hunt Capital Partners are partnering together as developers on this venture. The building has been unoccupied for more than ten years but holds historical significance as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Originally built in 1962 by renowned Las Vegas hotelier Jay Sarno as the Cabana Motor Court Hotel, this property was once frequented by celebrities such as The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. Even actress Raquel Welch worked there briefly as a cocktail waitress in its famous “Bon Vivant Room.” Many historic elements will be restored during its conversion into apartments under new ownership.
