One of Tempe’s most beloved landmarks, the old Hayden Flour Mill off Rio Salado Parkway, is set to undergo an adaptive reuse project. Phoenix Business Journal reports that two local developers – Venue Projects and Sunbelt Holdings – have been chosen for the bid to develop and lease a 5-acre site. The group plans on preserving as much of the mill as possible.
The mill closed in 1998 but was bought by the city in 2003; since then, two private companies have acquired development rights which eventually expired until now. The new plan includes eight buildings with six newly built structures featuring retail components such as food & beverage options, specialty shops and entertainment retailing possibilities.
Moreover, partners will seek national nomination for historic preservation for this iconic site in Tempe’s history books!
