One of Tempe’s most endearing landmarks, the old Hayden Flour Mill off the Rio Salado Parkway, is set to be transformed into a community asset. Phoenix Business Journal reports that two area developers have been awarded the bid to work on an adaptive reuse project for this 5-acre site. Venue Projects and Sunbelt Holdings plan to preserve as much of the mill as possible while introducing eight buildings including six newly built structures. The retail component will include food and beverage options, specialty shops and entertainment retail outlets with a national nomination for historic preservation also being sought after by these partners. This iconic mill has been closed since 1998 when it was purchased by City in 2003; previous development rights granted over time have now expired making way for this exciting new venture!
