The Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center (GMDC), The Bridge, and Mega Development recently celebrated the completion of their joint project in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood. This $118-million development is the first of its kind in the area, combining both residential and industrial spaces at the former site of Fox’s U-Bet Chocolate Syrup factory on Rockaway Avenue and Newport Street.
The newly reimagined GMDC Brownsville Industrial Center features 39,000 square feet of light industrial space on its ground floor. Above that is Bridge Rockaway, a mixed-use building with 174 affordable housing units as well as supportive housing units. Additionally, there is a 2,000 square-foot community space that spans half a city block. This unique project marks New York City’s first instance of co-locating affordable housing and industrial space on one site.
Brian T. Coleman, CEO of Greenpoint Manufacturing and Design Center expressed his excitement about finally opening after nearly eight years since planning began: “This project achieves what many thought was impossible – providing safe and affordable access to over 170 residential units alongside more than 39 thousand square feet for light manufacturing.”
