WinnCompanies, in collaboration with federal, state and local officials, celebrated the grand opening of Stone Mill Lofts in Massachusetts. This $39.2-million project involved transforming the oldest mill in Lawrence into a mixed-income multifamily property that runs entirely on electricity.
According to Larry Curtis, president and managing partner of WinnDevelopment, this development marks a significant milestone for the city as it brings together its past and present by restoring a 19th century manufacturing landmark with modern energy-efficient systems. The two-year construction effort was made possible through partnerships and will provide much-needed housing for households who are part of Lawrence’s ongoing success story.
The design of Stone Mill Lofts is completely fossil-fuel-free and is expected to use 46% less energy while emitting 33% fewer greenhouse gases compared to traditional gas-fired structures. With features such as heat pumps and energy recovery systems, this building will save an estimated 177 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually according to WinnCompanies’ calculations.
