BOMA New York recently held its annual Energy Action Day event to discuss the city’s post-Local Law 97 built environment. The panelists, including representatives from Vornado Realty Trust, Brookfield Properties and RXR, discussed their commitment to carbon neutrality and the benefits of energy efficiency for tenants’ health and well-being as well as property values. They also highlighted the growing nexus between wellness and sustainability along with a trend toward electrification in cities across America.
New York State Senator Kevin S. Parker delivered a keynote address confirming plans to ban natural gas hookups for most new buildings from 2026 onwards. He added that there is “a lot of work ahead of us,” but “all of us are working together” on electrifying public and private development projects throughout America; noting that reducing carbon emissions from gas or methane is an international challenge we must all face together moving forward into this green future for our built environment .
