"Francis Scott Key Bridge Reconstruction Contract Awarded for $73M by MD"

The MDTA Board has approved a $73 million contract with Kiewit Infrastructure Co., an engineering and construction firm based in Nebraska, to begin the first phase of replacing the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. This marks the start of a major infrastructure overhaul set to commence in 2025. Through a Progressive Design-Build process, Kiewit was chosen for their expertise in design and demolition work, which is the first step towards completing this $1.7 billion project by 2028.

The new bridge will be taller and have enhanced pier protection to prevent future ship collisions. It will maintain four lanes but also include wider shoulders that meet modern standards. The goal of this project is to restore an essential link within Baltimore’s transportation network while improving safety and supporting economic growth within the region.

Kiewit has been granted exclusive negotiating rights for the second phase upon successful completion of their work on phase one. This next stage includes final design/engineering as well as construction for this vital reconstruction effort.
