Houston's Efforts to Launch a 500-Unit Affordable Housing Project

Houston is currently working on a plan to develop a 500-unit affordable housing project on an expansive 10.7-acre site located at 800 Burnett St. This ambitious development would be the largest in the county to utilize funds from the American Rescue Plan Act.

To make this project possible, Harris County Commissioners Court has allocated $14.6 million from both ARPA and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds to purchase the land from the city of Houston.

Once ownership of the land is secured, Harris County will begin soliciting proposals and forming a steering committee for this multi-year endeavor.

In total, Harris County received $915.5 million in ARPA funds, with $273 million specifically designated for housing projects and programs. The Hardy Yards project marks one of eighteen developments that have been supported by these allocations thus far.
