"Additional Funding Approved for Austin Airport, Potential for More in the Future"

The Austin City Council has approved contracts totaling nearly $500 million for the expansion of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. These five requests are part of a larger series of potential approvals that could reach up to $2.5 billion in the coming months.

The largest portion of these funds, amounting to $346.7 million, will go towards design and construction support services for improving the airfield at ABIA. This includes replacing existing taxiways to make way for a new concourse structure.

Additional requests include $60 million for engineering and architectural services, $72 million for designing a new concourse and tunnel system, and $19.1 million for constructing a new baggage handling system.

ABIA was originally built in 1999 with capacity to accommodate 11 million passengers annually; however, it saw over 22 millions passengers in 2023 alone.
