"New York City Requests Proposals for Revamping Park Avenue Adjacent to Grand Central"

On Tuesday, the Adams administration announced an RFP for a cohesive design plan for Park Avenue between 46th and 57th streets. This project will be implemented on top of the Grand Central Terminal Train Shed, which is currently undergoing major renovations by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) Metro-North Railroad.

The Department of Transportation is seeking proposals from contractors with expertise in landscape architecture or urban design to create an expanded median that prioritizes pedestrian safety and accessibility.

According to Mayor Eric Adams, high-quality public spaces are not just a luxury but a necessity. They play a crucial role in revitalizing commercial corridors like Midtown and creating a safer and more affordable city for all New Yorkers. The goal of this ambitious project is to ensure that when the MTA completes its underground structural work, Park Avenue will be better than ever before.

The first block along Park Avenue between 47th and 48th streets has already begun its train shed work under the MTA’s supervision. It is expected that this block will feature wider medians when it reopens as early as 2025.
