On Thursday, the New York City Council voted to pass the Bronx Metro-North Stations rezoning plan. This will result in approximately 7,000 new residential units being added and investments being made in infrastructure and community development for Parkchester, Van Nest, and Morris Park neighborhoods. The plan takes advantage of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s new Metro-North service to promote transit-oriented development. Its goal is to stimulate economic growth by creating more housing options, including affordable housing units. Additionally, it aims to attract investment into public areas surrounding stations in order to improve accessibility and pedestrian safety while enhancing overall quality of life.
Accordingly,Council Speaker Adrienne Adams stated that addressing New York City’s housing crisis requires increasing available homes for its residents. With the upcoming opening of new Metro-North stations in East Bronx comes a unique opportunity for developing additional housing options as well as opportunities for homeownership while also providing essential infrastructure improvements that will benefit these neighborhoods for years to come.
