The MBTA has taken the initial steps towards transforming the Alewife Complex in Cambridge into a mixed-use development with public transportation. By late summer, they will release requests for proposals to find a qualified developer, with submissions due in the fall.
To kick off this process, the transit agency recently held a joint development forum that attracted 175 attendees in person and over 75 virtually. The Alewife Complex currently includes a Red Line station, an expansive parking garage with 2,733 spaces and other commuter rail facilities.
Redevelopment of this complex will address several important priorities such as sustainability, modernizing infrastructure and integrating multiple modes of transportation. It will also focus on climate resilience and promoting transit-oriented development. According to MBTA general manager and CEO Phillip Eng: “Mixed-use developments like Alewife have great potential to drive economic growth within local communities while also providing more affordable housing options and supporting our state’s efforts towards combatting climate change.”
