On Monday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and community leaders gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new CTA Damen Green Line station at Lake Street and Damen Avenue. This modern station addresses a long-standing need for improved transportation options on the Near West Side, and its completion comes just in time for the upcoming Democratic National Convention.
After years of delays, this reopening ensures that the station will be fully operational later this month during the convention. “This new station is an incredible achievement for our city,” stated Mayor Johnson. “The highly anticipated Damen Green Line on Chicago’s Near West Side will have a ripple effect on this neighborhood, attracting future investments to create a dynamic hub of mixed-use developments.”
Funded by $80 million from TIF (Tax Increment Financing), CDOT oversaw close collaboration with CTA to bring this project to fruition. The construction was carried out by F.H Paschen while Perkins&Will – renowned global architecture and design firm based in Chicago – designed the state-of-the-art station known for their expertise in transit projects worldwide.
