A new urban design concept has been released by the National Capital Planning Commission, proposing an expansion of over 20 acres to the National Mall. The study outlines a vision for repairing damage caused by I-66 construction between K Street NW and the Mall, as well as improving connectivity between Rock Creek Parkway, Kennedy Center, and downtown.
Collaboratively created by planners from NCPC, District government and private sector representatives, this conceptual design aims to expand the National Mall towards its northwest side with Kennedy Center serving as a western anchor. This involves “decking over” existing transportation infrastructure to create more green space and restore natural beauty in the area. The plan builds upon a long-term plan from 2009 and has been presented for review and approval by U.S. Commission of Fine Arts.
In addition to expanding green space on site, the proposal also recommends forming a designated committee to champion this vision, and lobbying for congressional support.Furthermore,it suggests designing E Street into a grand boulevard that would be part of an upcoming cultural district.
