Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that he will be relocating the headquarters of two of his companies, X Corp. and SpaceX, from California to Texas. This move comes as no surprise as both companies have been expanding their operations in the Lone Star State.
SpaceX’s manufacturing and launch site, known as Starbase, has been growing in southeast Texas and will now serve as its new headquarters instead of Hawthorne, CA. Meanwhile, X (formerly Twitter) is leaving its longtime home in San Francisco for Austin.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal , X has already been expanding its presence in Texas with plans to hire employees for a team focused on content safety issues based out of Austin earlier this year.
It remains unclear what will happen to X’s complex in San Francisco after the move. It is possible that they may maintain some sort of presence there similar to Tesla’s “engineering headquarters” office located outside their main base in Palo Alto while being headquartered elsewhere.
Similarly, SpaceX has also increased its footprint within Texas with plans for large-scale manufacturing facilities not only for itself but also Musk’s other ventures such as Tesla and The Boring Company within the Austin metro area. In response to Musk’s announcement about moving his companies’ HQs from California Gov.Greg Abbott tweeted that this solidifies Texas’ position at the forefront of space exploration.
