Affordable housing advocates and a bipartisan coalition of local leaders in California are raising concerns about Prop 33, the new name for the Justice for Renters Act. This measure aims to repeal Costa Hawkins and will be on ballots statewide in November. However, experts warn that it is deeply flawed and could worsen the state’s housing crisis.
Corey Smith, executive director of Housing Action Coalition, states that this ballot measure will only make it harder to address the severe housing and homelessness crisis in California. It could hinder efforts to build affordable housing when it is needed most and make finding homes more difficult for those experiencing homelessness.
No on Prop 33 has released a statement highlighting how economists from Stanford University and UC Berkeley have expressed their belief that this measure would exacerbate California’s already dire situation by limiting construction of new affordable units. Additionally, NIMBYs (Not In My Backyard) may use this as an opportunity to block such developments while also overturning laws requiring more affordable homes to be built. The campaign against Prop 33 has garnered support from organizations like California Apartment Association, California YIMBY as well as over 80 other groups along with county officials who believe voting no on this proposition is crucial.
