Nation's First Moxy: A Potential Student Housing Option

Tempe’s planning agency is considering a proposal to convert the Moxy Phoenix Tempe/ASU into student housing, potentially replacing the existing hotel. The project, led by Vale Student Housing and developed by East Coast real estate firm Gilbane Development Co., would transform the 186-key Moxy by Marriott International Inc. into a 277-unit student housing complex with 1-4 bedroom units. The structure, originally built in the 1970s and previously home to Four Points by Sheraton hotel, opened in 2016 with an aim to attract millennials and business travelers.

Despite being only eight years old, concerns over its outdated design have prompted plans for redevelopment. Phoenix-based architecture firm Todd & Associates has been tasked with designing this innovative project that could set a precedent for future developments of this kind.

The proposed conversion aligns with Gilbane Development Co.’s expertise in various sectors such as affordable housing, healthcare facilities, and mixed-use properties among others. The potential transformation of nation’s first Moxy brand property highlights Tempe’s growing demand for quality student accommodations near Arizona State University campus without compromising on modern amenities or convenience.
