California YIMBY has announced its opposition to a statewide ballot measure, known as the Justice for Renters Act, which is being funded by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF). The group believes that this proposed measure, promoted by AHF president Michael Weinstein, would hinder new home construction across the state. According to Brian Hanlon, CEO of California YIMBY, Weinstein has a history of not only opposing affordable housing but also purchasing existing affordable homes and allowing them to fall into disrepair.
Hanlon stated that California YIMBY supports well-crafted rent stabilization and tenant protection programs in order to make housing more affordable for all Californians. They believe that building more homes is crucial in achieving broad-based affordability and housing security instead of enabling NIMBY cities from banning new homes through a flawed ballot measure written by one of the most well-funded NIMBY groups in California.
The California Apartment Association (CAA) is also working against this proposed ballot measure. Earlier this year they expressed concerns about it potentially leading back to extreme rent control policies seen in cities like Berkeley,San Francisco, and Santa Monica before Costa-Hawkins was enacted in 1995.The CAA stated,”If passed, the Justice for Renters Act could resultin similar outcomes.”
