"UT Hospital to Replace Erwin Center"

The iconic Frank Erwin Center, once a prominent steel and concrete structure in Austin, has been completely demolished as of last week. The demolition process began in June 2023 and was carried out meticulously by crews.

Situated near downtown Austin, the Erwin Center was widely recognized as the city’s top venue for both public and private events. From UT basketball games to concerts, professional wrestling matches to bull riding shows, this arena hosted a variety of events over the years. It was originally built in 1977 at a cost of $34 million.

Now that it has been torn down, the site will be transformed into something new – an advanced medical care system known as University of Texas at Austin Medical Center. This state-of-the-art facility will consist of two towers: one for specialty care clinics and another housing MD Anderson Cancer Center from Houston.

Construction on these modern facilities is set to commence in 2026 with plans to start accepting patients by 2030 under UT’s management.
