Skanska Secures $24 Million Contract to Enhance MBTA's Red Line

Skanska, a leading construction company, has been awarded a $24 million contract by the MBTA (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) to enhance the Red Line in Boston. The project will involve six 24/7 track outages scheduled for 2024 and aims to improve the city’s busiest subway line.

The comprehensive scope of work includes replacing ties, rail, and restrained rail on tangent and curved tracks. Broken or damaged spike plates will also be replaced with pandrol plates along with insulators and C-Bonds. Additionally, contact rail and ballast will be replaced while joint elimination through thermite welding will take place. Repairs to direct fixation systems as well as floating slabs including concrete repairs are also part of this project.

According to Rob Pine, vice president of operations for Skanska USA Civil’s New England region: “We are delighted to continue our partnership with MBTA through this new project on the Red Line.” He further added that these improvements are crucial for daily commutes across Boston.

This latest development by Skanska is set to bring significant enhancements without mentioning any specific locations such as Connect CRE or Connect LA/Texas.
