Georgia’s largest economic development project is set to open earlier than expected. Hyundai Motor Group’s Metaplant America, located near Savannah, will officially begin production in the fourth quarter of 2024 instead of the previously projected first half of 2025.
The highly anticipated plant will be Hyundai’s first mass-production facility for electric vehicles and will manufacture cars for both Hyundai, Genesis and Kia brands. With an investment of $7.59 billion from Hyundai, the Metaplant is expected to generate approximately 8,500 jobs in Georgia. Partnering with LG Energy Solution for battery components further solidifies this project as a major boost to Georgia’s economy.
In addition to creating thousands of jobs at the plant itself, this development has also attracted various suppliers such as Hwashin (a car part manufacturer) and Daechang Seat Corp (a frame manufacturer). The state can also look forward to Rivian Automotive Inc.’s new plant in Stanton Springs which is estimated to bring about 7,500 job opportunities outside of those created by Hyundai.
