"Atlanta Hospital Converted into Homeless Shelter"

Atlanta’s homeless population living under bridges will soon have a temporary emergency shelter at the former Wellstar Atlanta Medical Center campus. According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, this shelter will provide wrap-around services, including housing and medical care, for individuals in need. However, there is a limited time frame for individuals to stay at the shelter as it aims to help them transition into more permanent housing solutions.

The ultimate goal of this initiative is to prepare these individuals for independent living. It should be noted that this arrangement with Wellstar and the city only lasts 180 days and is not intended as a long-term solution.

In November 2022, Wellstar closed down Atlanta Medical Center which has sparked negotiations between the city and potential buyers who could develop a smaller hospital with essential services like an emergency room along with other amenities such as neonatal care and cancer treatment. This development would also include residential units, doctor’s offices, among others.
