Expansion Austin Prepares for $1.6B Convention Center Expansion

The city of Austin is preparing for a major transformation with the construction of a new convention center. The contracts have been awarded to JE Dunn and Turner for construction, and LMN and Page Southerland Page for design and engineering. This $1.6 billion project is set to begin in 2025, with an expected completion date of 2029.

According to reports from the Austin Business Journal, this redevelopment will have a significant economic impact on the city, increasing from $468 million to over $750 million once completed. It is also projected to create 1,622 jobs.

Funding for this project will come from the city’s hotel occupancy tax as well as revenue generated by the convention center itself. With plans to nearly double its current size, much of the new building will be constructed underground up to 65 feet below street level. Three separate buildings are planned on top of this underground core, including one that will reach up 30 stories high.

This exciting development in Austin marks a major milestone in its growth as an economic hub and destination for conventions and events.
