WinnCompanies and the Boston Housing Authority have revealed a $2 billion proposal to redevelop the Mary Ellen McCormack public housing complex. The ambitious project will replace 1,016 existing public housing units with 3,300 mixed-income apartments, ensuring current residents have the right to return.
The first phase of this plan has been approved by BPDA and will span eight years. It includes constructing 1,310 apartments along with infrastructure improvements such as retail spaces and a focus on community resilience. Additionally, WinnCompanies has allocated $110 million for public infrastructure enhancements including revamping street grids, installing new utilities and parks while also implementing long-term climate resiliency measures.
“We are thrilled to finally reach this point where we can look forward to construction beginning,” stated Carol Sullivan who serves as president of the Mary Ellen McCormack Tenant Task Force. “Throughout the past six-and-a-half years of planning process Winn Companies and BHA have prioritized our needs as residents in every aspect from relocation plans to necessary services provided through retail options all while maintaining security.”
