Target has announced the closure of nine stores in major cities across four states, citing theft and organized retail crime as reasons for an unsafe and unsustainable business environment. The company stated that despite their efforts, they continue to face challenges in operating these stores successfully.
The Seattle market will be affected by the closure of two Target locations: 4535 University Way NE and 1448 NW Market Street. These closures are set to take place on October 21st. In addition, three Portland locations will also be closing down along with three Bay Area stores and one store in New York City.
According to a report from the Puget Sound Business Journal , approximately 90 employees will be impacted by this move based on a filing with the Washington State Employment Security Department. Employees from both Seattle stores have options to transfer or receive severance pay until the end of this year.
This decision comes as Target continues its efforts towards creating a safe shopping experience for customers while addressing concerns surrounding retail crime within their operations.
