“$146 Million Backup Power Source Planned for Sugar Land”

"$146 Million Backup Power Source Planned for Sugar Land"

Sugar Land, Texas is taking proactive measures to prepare for potential disasters. The town was severely impacted by Winter Storm Uri in 2021 (see photo), which caused widespread power outages and resulted in significant damages and loss of life.

To ensure the safety and stability of its residents, Sugar Land has approved a $146 million lease to construct a state-of-the-art power generation plant with an output capacity of 135 megawatts. This facility will be equipped with weather-resistant engines powered by natural gas, allowing it to restore electricity within five minutes in the event of a grid failure. Unlike traditional power sources that rely on external grids, this plant will provide reliable electricity even during blackouts.

The development project is being spearheaded by Sugar Land Economic Development and Tourism on approximately 100 acres near Highway 6 and Highway 90A. Construction partners have yet to be selected but are expected to bring various economic benefits such as job creation and increased revenue for the city upon completion.

This investment in backup power demonstrates Sugar Land’s commitment to protecting its community from future disasters while also promoting economic growth.
